2012, year of the polymath?

Polymath (n.): A person of varied learning.

In this 2nd quarter of 2012, we’re seeing challenges in the research industry and beyond. If you cannot deal with these challenges, 2012 is looking like it’s about to get even tougher.

1. The pressure to do more for less remains firmly on. As a consultant, we’re getting used to thinking of lateral solutions that meet multiple agendas and shrinking budgets and still deliver the key insights!

2. You need to be able to tell the story. And drive actions. And hit targets. And negotiate budgets. Working efficiently is therefore of the essence.

3. Nothing is ever certain. So if you’re good at plate-juggling, it helps.

4. People still want to talk. You might need to be selective with who you talk to, but making time for conversations remains important (and hopefully enjoyable).

5. Do something else. Learn a language, an instrument, a new sport. It opens up new perspectives – and you are likely to find a solution to a problem when you are least thinking about it.
